Who invented pants? |
| Some
time ago pants were typically masculine clothes. Men wore short pants for many centuries. During the XVII - XVIII centuries, men were wearing
breeches. Those short pants end with cuffs below the knee and with buttons.
They had appeared in France at the court of Louis XIV and were part of
men’s suit before the XIX century. (In 1966 Yves Saint Laurent
brought them back into fashion, but as an element of women's costume). England is considered the birthplace of modern pants. England was the first country which gave a description of a gentleman: it was a well-mannered, successful young man in a tuxedo, wool pants, a vest, a shirt, a tie, the gloves, a hat and a cane in hand. This type was created in the early XIX century, became a real authority for all western men later. The East is thought the Historic home of women’s pants. However, if in ancient times it was still possible to see the beautiful ladies pictured in the pants, and then in more recent times women who have dared to wear ‘barbaric’ clothes waiting for the death punishment. The wearing of pants was considered exclusively male privilege in the middle ages. French novelist George Sand became the first woman who began to wear pants. It was in the middle of the XIX century. But her contemporaries criticized her, although women’s clothing has become closer a little bit to the male with the emergence of the feminist movement. Women were forced to work alongside men during the First World War, and pants were the most relevant. Nevertheless, feminine dress was still the basis of a lady’s wardrobe. In 30’es of XX century a famous actress Marlene Dietrich tried on a strict suit with a tie and a hat. But the women did not rush to include still pants in their wardrobe. Legendary Gabrielle Chanel introduced straight pants as one of the attributes of women’s clothes, but elegant dress was still expected for an evening party. Her pant suit had been subjected to widespread criticism for a long time. It was only in 1966 the famous fashion designer Yves Saint-Laurent submitted public pant suit, which was liked by almost all the ladies. Collection of straight wool pants was instantly sold out in a huge price. In the 80 years fashion designer from Italian Giorgio Armani introduced the pants suit for every day wear. It was intended for educated working women, who prefer a strict dress. |
